Trichomoniasis Treatment and Medication

Trichomoniasis, often called trich, is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Many people have no symptoms, which means the infection can be passed to a partner without knowing it. When symptoms occur, women may notice vaginal discharge, genital itching or irritation, discomfort with urination, or pain during sex. Men may experience penile irritation, discharge, or burning after urination or ejaculation.

Start a trichomoniasis treatment online consultation if you have a positive test, symptoms, or a partner who has been diagnosed. A provider can review your history and determine the appropriate next step. Symptoms alone cannot reliably diagnose trichomoniasis, so testing may be recommended.

Standard trichomoniasis treatment uses oral prescription medication. CDC-recommended regimens include metronidazole, with the recommended regimen differing for women and men. Tinidazole is an alternative in certain cases.

Your provider will determine which treatment is appropriate based on your sex, medical history, pregnancy status, previous treatment, possible reinfection, and other factors.

Trichomoniasis Treatment: What to Expect

Learn how treatment works, when testing or an exam may be needed, which medications may be used, and what to expect after treatment.

Symptoms & Testing

Trich can cause discharge, itching, irritation, genital discomfort, or burning with urination, but many infections cause no symptoms at all. Symptoms can also overlap with bacterial vaginosis (BV) and other vaginal infections.

Partner Treatment & Reinfection

Trichomoniasis can pass between sexual partners, including when someone has no symptoms. Current partners should also be treated to reduce the chance of reinfection. Avoid sex until treatment is complete for everyone involved and symptoms have resolved.

When In-Person Care May Be Needed

Testing or an in-person examination may be recommended when the diagnosis is unclear, symptoms are severe or persistent, treatment has already failed, or another condition may be causing the symptoms.

After Treatment

Sex partners should also receive treatment to reduce the risk of passing the infection back and forth. Avoid sex until you and your partner or partners have completed treatment and symptoms have resolved.

After Your Consultation

What Happens Next

Your next steps depend on your evaluation. They may include:

  • A treatment plan based on your symptoms
  • Prescription medication when medically appropriate
  • Over-the-counter treatment recommendations
  • Testing before treatment
  • Follow-up if symptoms do not improve
  • Changes to treatment if symptoms continue
  • Referral for in-person care when needed
  • Guidance on when to seek urgent care

frequently asked questions

Can I get trichomoniasis treatment online?

Yes. A licensed healthcare provider can review your symptoms, exposure, medical history, and available test results online. Testing may still be recommended before treatment in some situations.

What is the recommended treatment for trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is usually treated with oral metronidazole. CDC guidance recommends metronidazole 500 mg twice daily for 7 days for women and a single 2-gram oral dose for men. Tinidazole is an alternative in some cases.

What is the treatment for trichomoniasis in men?

For men, CDC guidance recommends metronidazole 2 grams by mouth as a single dose. Tinidazole 2 grams as a single dose is an alternative. Persistent or recurrent infection may require a different treatment plan.

Can I get antibiotics for trich online?

Yes. Prescription treatment for trichomoniasis can be provided after an online medical evaluation when appropriate. Trich is most commonly treated with oral metronidazole, although testing or an in-person evaluation may sometimes be recommended.

Can metronidazole treat both BV and trichomoniasis?

Yes. Metronidazole is used to treat both bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis, but the treatment regimens are not always the same. Vaginal metronidazole gel may be used for BV but is not recommended for treating trichomoniasis.

What is the treatment for BV and trich?

BV and trich can cause similar symptoms, but they are different conditions. Both may be treated with certain metronidazole regimens, so testing can help determine whether you have BV, trichomoniasis, or another cause of vaginal symptoms.

How can I tell whether I have BV or trich?

Symptoms alone usually cannot reliably tell the difference. BV often causes thin discharge and a fish-like odor, while trich can cause discharge, irritation, burning, or discomfort with urination or sex. Testing may be needed to confirm the cause.

Is there a natural way to cure trichomoniasis?

No natural or over-the-counter remedy has been proven to cure trichomoniasis. Recommended treatment uses prescription oral medication such as metronidazole or tinidazole. Supplements, douching, and home remedies should not be relied on to clear the infection.

Can I treat trichomoniasis with over-the-counter medicine?

No. There is no recommended over-the-counter medicine that cures trichomoniasis. Effective treatment requires prescription oral medication.

Can metronidazole vaginal gel cure trich?

No. Metronidazole vaginal gel is not recommended for trichomoniasis because it is less effective than oral treatment and does not reach adequate medication levels in all areas where the infection may be present.

Does my partner need treatment for trichomoniasis?

Yes. Current sex partners should also receive treatment to reduce the chance of reinfection. Avoid sex until treatment has been completed by both partners and symptoms have resolved.

Can trichomoniasis come back after treatment?

Yes. Reinfection is common, especially when a sex partner has not been treated. Persistent infection can also occur after incomplete treatment or, less commonly, because of medication resistance.

Do I need another trich test after treatment?

Sexually active women are generally advised to be retested about 3 months after treatment because reinfection is common. Testing may also be recommended sooner for persistent symptoms, although certain molecular tests should not be performed too soon after treatment.

How much does online trichomoniasis treatment cost?

The total cost can include the online consultation, testing when needed, and prescription medication. Pharmacy and testing costs vary, so check the current Doctor Alexa consultation price and any separate laboratory or medication charges.
