How Online Prescription Refills Work
A prescription refill continues a medication you already use, but it still requires a healthcare provider to determine whether the treatment remains appropriate. An old prescription does not automatically mean the same medication or dose should be continued indefinitely.
During an online prescription refill consultation, the provider reviews what you take, why you take it, your current dose, how long you have used it, and whether anything has changed since it was originally prescribed. Changes in symptoms, new medications, side effects, pregnancy, blood pressure, kidney or liver function, and other health factors can affect whether a medication should be renewed.
The amount of medical information needed varies by prescription. Some established medications can be reviewed using your current history and treatment information. Others require periodic blood tests, vital signs, physical examinations, or specialist follow-up.
Online care can be useful when your regular prescriber is unavailable or you have run out of an established medication. The provider’s role is not simply to authorize another supply, but to make sure continuing the medication is a reasonable and safe next step.

What to Know About Prescription Refills Online
Learn how treatment works, when testing or an exam may be needed, which medications may be used, and what to expect after treatment.

Prescription Information
Have the medication name, strength, dose, reason you take it, and preferred pharmacy available. A photo of the prescription bottle or recent pharmacy record may help confirm your current treatment.
Your provider may also ask when you last took the medication, how long you have used it, and whether your health or other medications have changed.

Medication & Refill Eligibility
Many routine maintenance medications may be considered for an online refill. Eligibility depends on the specific medication, your medical history, how recently you have been evaluated, and any monitoring the treatment requires.
A prior prescription does not guarantee that another prescription will be issued.

When In-Person Care May Be Needed
Some medications require blood tests, blood pressure readings, physical examination, imaging, or specialist monitoring. An in-person visit may also be recommended when symptoms have changed significantly or the diagnosis or treatment plan needs to be reassessed.

After Treatment
If a prescription is issued, it can be sent electronically to your selected pharmacy. The pharmacy fills and dispenses the medication separately. Follow any recommended monitoring or follow-up, especially for medications used long term. Another evaluation may be needed before future refills.

frequently asked questions
Can I get an online prescription refill?
Yes. Many medications can be considered for an online prescription refill after a licensed healthcare provider reviews your medication, medical history, and current needs. Some prescriptions require testing, monitoring, or an in-person evaluation before they can be renewed.
How can I get a prescription refill without my doctor?
You do not always need to see the clinician who originally prescribed your medication. Another licensed healthcare provider can review your treatment and issue a new prescription if continuing the medication is appropriate. Prescription-only medication still requires authorization from a qualified prescriber.
Can I refill a prescription online?
Yes. You can request a prescription refill online through a consultation with a licensed healthcare provider. Have the medication name, dose, reason you take it, and relevant medical history available.
Can I get an online prescription refill without a video visit?
The type of evaluation required depends on the medication, your medical history, applicable prescribing requirements, and the provider’s clinical judgment. Some refill requests can be handled without a traditional office visit, while others may require additional communication, a video evaluation, testing, or in-person care.
What medications can be refilled online?
Many established, non-controlled maintenance medications may be considered for online refill after a provider reviews your treatment. Whether a specific prescription can be renewed depends on the medication, your condition, recent monitoring, and whether continuing the treatment is safe.
Can controlled substances be refilled online?
Controlled substances have additional federal and state prescribing requirements and are not handled like routine prescription refills. Whether telehealth prescribing is permitted depends on the medication, current law, the clinical circumstances, and the provider or service involved.
Can Schedule II medications be refilled?
No. Schedule II prescriptions cannot legally be refilled in the ordinary sense. A new prescription is required for each supply.
Can I get a quick prescription refill online?
Online care can make it easier to request a refill without waiting for a traditional office appointment. How quickly a prescription can be issued depends on the medication, the information available to the provider, and whether additional evaluation or testing is needed.
What information do I need for a prescription refill?
Have your medication name, strength, dose, reason for taking it, and preferred pharmacy available. Your provider may also ask how long you have used the medication, when you last took it, whether you have side effects, and whether you have recent lab results or other medical records.
Can I get a prescription refill without insurance?
Yes. You can pay directly for an online medical consultation without using insurance. Medication costs are separate and depend on the prescription, pharmacy, insurance coverage, and available pharmacy discounts.
Is a prescription refill online free?
Doctor Alexa consultations are not free. The consultation covers evaluation by a licensed healthcare provider. Medication and pharmacy charges are separate.
What happens if my prescription has no refills left?
A provider can evaluate whether issuing a new prescription is appropriate. This is different from using an authorized refill that is already attached to an existing prescription. Some states also allow pharmacists to provide limited emergency supplies of certain medications under specific circumstances.
Can a pharmacy refill my medication without contacting a doctor?
Sometimes. State law may allow a pharmacist to provide a limited emergency supply of certain established medications when the prescriber cannot be reached. The rules depend on the medication and the state where the prescription is being filled.
Can I refill a prescription at a different pharmacy?
Often, yes. Many prescriptions with remaining refills can be transferred between pharmacies. Transfer rules vary by medication, pharmacy, and applicable state and federal requirements. Controlled medications may have additional restrictions.
Will I automatically receive a prescription after my consultation?
No. Completing a consultation does not guarantee a prescription. The provider reviews your medication and health information and determines whether continuing the treatment is appropriate or whether another type of evaluation is needed.
