Strep Throat Medical Information

Strep throat is a highly contagious common bacterial infection that causes pain and inflammation in the throat. The bacteria that triggers Strep throat is called group A streptococcus. Someone can become infected with the bacteria if they touch their eyes, nose, or mouth after being exposed to bacteria which can be transferred by respiratory droplets airborne. Strep throat usually can be treated with antibiotics.

Signs and Symptoms

• sore throat
• fever
• red and swollen tonsils
• painful or swollen lymph nodes

If left untreated, other symptoms may appear after three days:

• red and white patches in the throat
• trouble swallowing
• a headache
• lower stomach pain
• general discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling
• loss of appetite
• nausea
• rash
